Should You Buy A SUV Or A CUV?

If you’re on the fence about buying an SUV or a car-based crossover SUV, it might help to remember what each vehicle was originally designed for. The original Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) was a rugged, back to basics ride meant for off-road drivers. Today, this vehicle still features a truck-like body but is a lot more sophisticated on the road. Car-based Crossover Sports Utility Vehicles (CUVs) took the place of the popular SUV in the 90’s. These cars are easier to manage in city spaces and are more fuel efficient. Some models still have rugged exteriors making it seem like a truck, but with better performance.

Any SUV today comes with a rear drive and an optional four-wheel-drive system that provides optimal traction on wet or snowy roads. If you need a strong, capable vehicle to tow or haul goods that weigh upward of 10,000 pounds, then the SUV is a no brainer. Most models come with a turbocharged V6 engine or a naturally aspirated (non-turbo) V8. Since the SUV is bulky, it’s a gas guzzler compared to CUVs and other passenger cars. If you intend to use it in the city, you’d better have strong parallel parking skills since SUVs can be difficult to maneuver. Tall ride heights also make it harder for shorter drivers to get in and out of. Having said that, there are a few automakers that sell models with more convenient features.

Most CUV’s have four-cylinder engines, a turbocharged four-cylinder and/or a V6 engine. This offers fantastic fuel economy, easy acceleration and lighter curb weights. There’s also more cargo room and a standard front-drive configuration. Some models have an all wheel drive, which provides good traction. A compact model  works well for single people or couples while a midsize model is great for growing families.

Ultimately, your needs will determine whether an SUV or CUV is best. Want something burly and powerful to haul a trailer or a boat? The SUV is your best bet. For a city ride that’s safer and more convenient, choose the CUV. Remember that a CUV is usually more expensive than a same-size passenger car, but has more truck-like design and engineering features.
